Car theft 'often follows robbery or burglary'

7 May 2009

A number of cars were stolen last year following robbery or domestic burglary, figures show.

Statistics from AA Insurance suggest this was the case for around 18,500 cars, which were stolen after keys were found inside people's homes.

"We believe many such cars are stolen to order and thieves may be waiting for the right opportunity to seize them," commented Simon Douglas, Director of AA Car Insurance.

He added that the company is seeing a surge in these sorts of claims, emphasising the need for people to have car insurance in place.

Earlier this month, the AA warned drivers to take breaks while driving over the bank holiday weekend after it found that many people failed to stop on long journeys.

It discovered that one in 20 motorists never stop at all on such journeys.
