Motorists 'resort to risky driving to avoid potholes'

8 May 2009

Several of the country's drivers are resorting to risky manoeuvres in a bid to avoid potholes on Britain's roads, figures show.

According to Kwik-Fit, this is the case for nearly 10.5 million British drivers, who have taken such action over the past two months.

"The huge rise in numbers since the winter means that millions of motorists are regularly making dangerous split-second decisions to avoid damaging their cars," states David White, Customer Services Director at Kwik-Fit.

It is estimated that the amount of repair to wheels and tyres this has led to equates to around £380 million, not taking damage to suspension, exhausts and bodywork.

The Asphalt Industry Alliance believes it would take 15 years to repair all of the country's 94,000 potholes.
