Taking extra driving lessons 'should be rewarded'

11 June 2009

The government has been urged to introduce further incentives for younger drivers to take more driving lessons once they have passed. Some motorists already receive reduced car insurance premiums but there should be more reasons, according to the Association of British Drivers (ABD). Simon Douglas, Director of AA Insurance, told an insurance industry conference that insurers should recognise the efforts of younger drivers to reduce their insurance premiums by improving their driving. However, Hugh Bladon of the ABD explained that such benefits should be "automatic". He said: "There is the possibility of a reduced insurance premium through [them] but we think it should go further. "If the government were sensible, they would give people plus points instead of minus if they've passed some sort of accredited improvement course." Mr Bladon added that most young drivers only start to learn how to drive once they have got their license, claiming that most accidents occur because motorists are not made properly aware of the potential results of their actions.
