Over-50s motorists 'risking engine damage'

18 June 2009

Many of the country's older motorists are risking causing long-term damage to their cars by failing to check oil levels regularly, according to new research.

Statistics compiled by RIAS show that this is the case for over half of UK motorists over the age of 50, who are not making the necessary checks at least once a month.

Of these 7.5 million motorists, 1.9 million never check their oil at all, while 900,000 rely on their garages to check the levels.

"Even more surprising, especially in the current climate, are the financial risks that people are prepared to take by failing to spend a few minutes each month to check their vehicle's oil level," noted Janet Connor, Managing Director of RIAS. O

Earlier this month, uSwitch.com advised festival-goers not to rely on their car insurance to protect their belongings.
