Women 'at risk' from poor car knowledge

26 June 2009

Women drivers are putting themselves at risk of being stranded by having inadequate car maintenance knowledge, according to new research.

Failing to make basic checks on vehicles is causing many of the problems, said Churchill Car Insurance, as women lag behind their male counterparts when it comes to car-related expertise.

"Having basic car maintenance knowledge can not only help prevent car breakdown situations, but can keep motorists, especially women, feeling more confident on the roads," noted Claire Foster, spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance.

Over a quarter of men (28%) consider themselves to be experts on car maintenance, compared to just five per cent of women, the poll found, while 31% of females considered their car knowledge to be non-existent.

Sainsbury's Bank recently called upon drivers to ensure their safety when taking children to school after it emerged that 4.2 million people fail to fit the appropriate seating.
