Equality bill could help older motorists

30 June 2009

Pensioners could find they are entitled to lower car insurance premiums through the government's equality bill, it has been claimed.

The bill states that a ban should be imposed on anything which could discriminate against individuals on the basis of their age, which could include high car insurance premiums for the elderly.

"Today's consultation is about making sure beneficial things continue, such as discounts for pensioners, while harmful age discrimination is consigned to the past," said Vera Baird, Solicitor-General and Equality Bill Lead Minister.

It is also hoped that the change to legislation will make the law easier for people to navigate, as many perceive it to have been far too complex in the past.

Churchill Insurance recently advised women to get clued up on their basic car knowledge to avoid getting stranded by the side of the road.
