Increase in fuel theft highlighted

7 October 2008

Direct Line has highlighted an increase in incidents of fuel theft and is advising motorists to check their car insurance policies carefully to make sure they are covered for such a crime. The insurance provider said the rising cost of petrol is encouraging thieves to steal fuel from other people's vehicles, causing significant damage in the process. Indeed, it points out that it is difficult to siphon fuel from modern cars and so criminals are drilling holes in petrol tanks to extract the contents. This means that not only do drivers suffer the loss of their fuel, they are also faced with large repair bills, which according to Direct Line could run into thousands of pounds. Maggie Game, Head of Car Insurance at Direct Line, advised: "If you are a victim of fuel theft, get in touch with your insurer as soon as possible." According to Norwich Union, motorists may also be at risk from catalytic converter theft, claims for which have increased by 500% over the last year, the insurance company states.
