Drivers looking to avoid making car insurance claims are being urged to watch out for so called 'podestrians' walking into the road. Swinton Insurance says it has seen a significant increase in the number of drivers suffering minor accidents as a result of such individuals. Podestrians are people who listen to their mp3 players while walking down the street. According to Swinton, they have been a factor in a growing number of road accidents, often because they have stepped into the road and failed to hear oncoming traffic. Steve Chelton, Insurer Development Manager at Swinton Insurance, said: "On quieter roads podestrians can lead to drivers having to suddenly slam on their brakes." And he said mobile phones are another potential hazard, especially when they cross the road while sending a text message. According to the road safety charity Brake, 21% of people who die in road accidents are on foot.
