Road signs 'causing confusion' among motorists

6 October 2008

A large number of motorists are unable to correctly understand road signs such as those indicating that there is a cycle route or an uneven road ahead, new research shows. In a survey carried out by the AA Driving School, almost one in four drivers gave incorrect answers when asked to identify some of Britain's most common road signs. Around two-thirds of those questioned did not know the meaning of the cycle route ahead sign, while four out of ten could not identify the uneven road symbol. Perhaps rather worryingly, 7% did not understand the sign for national speed limit, with 5% claiming it meant no stopping at any time. Simon Douglas, Director of the AA Driving School, said: "While strong intuition and an awareness of your surroundings are valuable skills to have when driving, there is no substitute for a sound knowledge of the Highway Code." And he said drivers who do not understand road signs may be putting lives and car insurance premiums at risk. A recent survey by the car insurance provider esure revealed that 74% of drivers do not recognise all the Highway Code rules on parking.
