BT takes steps towards superfast broadband roll-out
BT has revealed it is to open up its broadband networks to rival companies, which could lead to the roll-out of superfast services.

If plans stay on track, uSwitch.com revealed that 40% of homes could be connected to the network in time for the 2012 Olympics.

"Once the deal is agreed, rival companies will have the opportunity to supply homes via their own fibre optic networks - but using BT's ducts means that they won't have to dig up any roads themselves," revealed Steve Weller, Communications Expert at the site.

He suggested that this could lead to savings on broadband packages being passed on to customers, making the cost of their communications services cheaper.

BT is expected to spend £1.5 billion on its new network, which will see speeds of 100Mb delivered to homes across the country.

As a result of the improvements, consumers may find they have sufficient bandwidth to deal with the likes of high definition films and other video content.
