Digital TVs that do not require glasses to be watched in 3D have been showcased by Toshiba.

Two digital TV sets are to be available, the company confirmed, with Japan to sell the first models from the end of the year.

The technology means that people will have to sit in front of the screen in a very specific position, as they rely on images being broadcast one after another in rapid succession.

Consumers are advised to sit 90cm away from its 20-inch set and 65cm away from the 12-inch screen in order to get the optimum results.

Rival manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony and Panasonic have developed 3D sets, but these require glasses to be viewed properly.

Sky recently launched the first 3D TV channel in Europe, showing a selection of films and premiership football matches, among others.

The company initially rolled out its services in pubs across the country.
