The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has moved to reaffirm its commitment to tackling debit and credit card fraud following the release of figures by APACS highlighting a continued rise in occurrences.
According to a report by APACS, who represent the UK card industry, fraud losses in 2004 stood at £504.8 million - up 20 per cent on 2003.
However, an ACPO spokesman insisted: "The police service remains committed to combating cheque and credit card fraud, and we have recently established a full-time national Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Card Crime Unit (DCPCU), run by the City of London Police with funding support from APACS and the Home Office.
"In addition, the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) is at the forefront of the fight against on-line 'phishing' and 'Trojan' scams."
The spokesperson added that the ACPO anticipates a fall in the level of credit card fraud when chip and pin takes full effect.
