Poorer households gaining broader access to mainstream credit cards

17 March 2005

A report from Bradford-based financial services firm Provident Financial has today revealed that poorer households in the UK are increasingly able to access mainstream credit cards.

Higher incomes and active marketing attempts from the main credit card companies are being attributed for this trend which has seen a number of UK households moving away from traditionally having to make use of door step lenders.

Ironically however, Provident Financial has released the findings on the same day it announced a seven per cent rise in pre-tax profits to £220.7 million.

The Yorkshire firm also confirmed that its own new credit card under the Vanquis Bank brand will be soon released after trials confirmed "clear evidence of a profitable market opportunity" according to This is Bradford.

Finance director John Harnett revealed that Provident is looking to sign up around 250,000 new credit card customers by next year in the UK.
