Barclays Bank has been forced to apologise to millions of customers after a computer glitch temporarily flawed around 1,500 ATMs across the South of England.
The fault left customers unable to access their money through the hole-in-the-wall machines or Link ATMs and also crashed telephone and internet banking services.
A spokesperson for the leading bank attempted to allay fears that the security of consumers' personal accounts had been compromised by the computer fault.
"There was no impact on security in any way. Accessibility for people to their own accounts was the problem, not security," she said.
"We would like to apologise to anyone who was affected and whose plans were affected."
The precise cause of the problem has not been disclosed and reports have refused to rule out further ATM inconveniences in the near future.
