MPs call for ATM transparency

31 March 2005

A powerful group of MPs has criticised fee-charging ATMs and has called for higher visibility labelling to warn people when withdrawing money.

The Treasury Select Committee also spoke out against the Post Office for having too many charging cash machines at its branches.

A recent report suggested that 75 per cent of Post Office branches now have fee-charging ATM services.

The committee insisted that this situation requires immediate attention, particularly after discovering that cash machine charges had risen to £140 million during 2004, substantially up on the £60 million figure recorded during the previous 12 months.

The committee chairman John McFall commented: "We are already paying £140 million a year to access our own money, this is a very worrying trend and one that should be monitored closely."
