Computer tapes containing the personal financial data of nearly four million customers of CitiFinancial, the financial division of credit card supplier and financial giant Citigroup, have disappeared.
The financial group said the tapes were lost by a courier company, during transit to a credit bureau.
The tapes contained personal information, banking details and account numbers for CitiFinancial's American branch network customers, as well as customers with closed accounts from CitiFinanical Retail Services.
Kevin Kessinger, executive vice president of Citigroup's Global Consumer Group, said: "We deeply regret this incident, which occurred in spite of the enhanced security procedures we require of our couriers."
The bank does not believe that the information has yet been mis-used, nor have their been any reports of unauthorized transactions.
