Brits' credit cards made safer abroad

16 June 2005

Britons are experiencing a downturn in credit card crime when going abroad, according to a new report.

According to APACS, the UK body that represents credit card issuers, improved credit card fraud detection systems are the primary reason for the drop in holiday credit card crime.

The new system means credit card firms are able to spot unusual spending patterns more easily.

Credit card crime committed against UK nationals abroad cost the industry £92.5 million in 2004, the lowest level for five years, and a figure made all the more impressive by the fact that the use of UK credit cards abroad had risen by 93 per cent.

Sandra Quinn, communications director at APACS, said: "The fall in card fraud abroad is great news for UK consumers, but cardholders should remember to follow a few simple rules to make sure they're protected while they're abroad.

"Simple things like making sure your cards never leave your sight, and remembering to dispose of receipts carefully can make all the difference."
