Travellers examine credit card options

6 July 2005

A leading travel expert has advised gap year travellers to examine their financial situation before jetting off, with credit cards potentially offering a suitable solution.

Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com, told This is Money that it is important that those planning to spend months or years abroad check they are financially prepared – whether it be insurance, credit cards or foreign currency.

Nationwide for example is currently offering a credit card that carries no additional charge for overseas travellers.

The card does, however, have a 1.5 per cent withdrawal fee – and experts urge those using a credit card to check the rates being applied in all cases.

It is estimated that 250,000 youngsters will embark on a gap-year expedition this year.
