12 July 2005

Thousands of Britons may have had their credit card details compromised following the discovery of a website that publishes vital information on the internet.

The Daily Mail has reported the discovery of a website that lists essential financial details that could lead to widespread online fraud.

The site, lists the credit card numbers, expiry dates and holder personal information of around 1,500 people, and is thought to have been operational since 2002.

Dan Hardman, head of technology with online security company 7safe, said: "These criminal gangs have extremely sophisticated methods and can infiltrate most systems."

Banking organisation Apcas has told all card providers to inform all customers involved and is investigating the matter in cooperation with the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit.
