Savings for credit card use abroad

14 July 2005

New research has revealed that Brits travelling abroad waste an estimated £541 million every year on charges to their plastic cards.

Many credit cards charge considerable fees for foreign currency charges, withdrawals from ATMs, interest charges and currency conversion.

It was found that foreign purchases billed to credit or debit cards exceed £19 billion in 2004.

Credit card users have been advised to carefully examine their bills after a holiday before putting pen to paper, as it can end up costing more if charges have been made using the bank's own currency converter, rather than the country's native currency.
