The advent of chip and PIN cards will create a new self-service culture among UK consumers, according to a secure transaction company.
The Logic Group said that the availability of kiosks and unattended checkouts in the retail sector would "significantly increase" as a result of the adoption of the chip and PIN technology, which consumers are now obliged to use.
Following the implementation of chip and PIN payment systems, the company is predicting that retailers will increasingly find new ways of serving customers.
Businesses now have the opportunity to accept sales without the costly need for staff to process every sale and transaction. It argued that self-service banking had already shown the way, increasing customer service, convenience and business efficiency in the process.
The Logic Group's marketing director Mark McMurtrie said: "There are clear signs of an increased take-up of self-service in the UK.
"Interest spans many merchants segments with the transport sector leading the way. Chip and PIN will help proliferate the spread of self service, now that both the card and card holder can be verified and authenticated securely."
