Card holders spending big on sport

26 June 2006

Brits will spend nearly £5 billion on sports and fitness activities this year, according to Barclays bank.

The bank found that its credit and debit card customers look set to spend £4.65 billion this year on sport and fitness, with the average person spending £206.

Of all its credit card and debit card customers, the bank found that men from Bolton spent the most on sport using their cards.

A total of 11.1% of their total card bill goes towards sport. Women in Blackley, Manchester, were the most prolific sport spenders for the fairer sex, although close behind were women from Wimbledon, perhaps spurred on by the start of the tennis championships in their area this week.

"Many of us spend most of our sporting life sat on the couch watching sport on the TV, but at this time of the year we dip in our pockets to buy new equipment, join clubs and then expect to see a brilliant return for our investment," said Mark Till from Barclays.
