Oxfam comments on RED credit card

19 October 2006

Oxfam has commented on the launch of the American Express RED card, which is designed to fight HIV, malaria and tuberculosis in Africa.

Part of a Global Fund initiative, the American Express RED card will see 1% of every pound spent on the product going to charity.

Ian Bray, Oxfam spokesman, said the American Express product was important as it presented people with the option to give to a charity.

He said: "Sometimes we miss these sorts of people in terms of charitable donations. This allows them to contribute.

"There is no indication that the RED card is having a negative effect on people's propensity to give to charity. It is just another way of contributing to charity."

"There is no evidence that the RED cards are stopping people giving to charity in a more traditional manner.

"We do not see it overtaking traditional methods of donations but it is a very innovative way to give to charity."

Compare credit cards and start saving money. It takes just a couple of minutes to find the best credit cards for your needs.
