Liverpool has been named as the first city to trial the new pre-pay credit card from Mastercard, known as the Bread card.
Designed to prevent consumers from falling into huge amounts of debt, the Bread card only allows customers to spend the amount which has been pre-paid onto it.
As well as providing a financially sensible way to shop, the fact that it is essentially a credit card allows consumers to shop online or over the phone as well as in store.
This card is particularly designed for consumers who struggle to get credit elsewhere due to a bad debt history or for those not wishing to have the constant commitment of another credit card hanging over their heads.
A spokesman for Mastercard told cardguide.co.uk: "This card will give people the chance to rebuild their credit rating, which is great for those who get into a bit of a mess during their teens and early 20s.
"With such a big focus on Liverpool as the Capital Of Culture, Bread thought the card would be perfect to launch in a city which seems to be growing more rapidly than any other in the UK."
