Credit cards for the climate conscious

22 March 2007

UK consumers are increasingly taking ethical issues into account when considering their financial products, a recent study carried out by the Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) reveals.

The CFS, parent company of Co-operative Bank, Co-operative Insurance and internet bank smile, found climate change to be a cause for concern for more than four in five Brits.

Some 82% of Brits surveyed said they would consider a product, such as a credit card, that was eco-friendly ahead of one that wasn't.

The Co-operative Bank offers its customers a series of affinity credit cards, whereby money is donated to a chosen charity when the credit card is taken out.

As and when the credit cards are used, further donations can be made, with beneficiaries including Greenpeace, Oxfam and Amnesty International.

David Newman, Marketing Director at CFS, explained: "We have been aware of the growing influence of ethics in consumer choice since we launched our ethical policy 15 years ago and it has now become more mainstream.

"Research shows that ethical consumerism is growing and is already worth more than £29.3 billion to the UK economy."
