MP falls foul of card fraudsters

3 August 2007

An MP has fallen foul of credit card fraudsters, it has been reported.

In a case that highlights the danger that affects all credit card customers, MP Bob Blizzard fell victim to fraudsters who gained access to his bank account details before making withdrawals of 1,000.

The withdrawals were made in a town in Northern Italy, which compounds recent reports that British credit cards are being targeted more and more by European fraudsters.

Mr Blizzard said: "It's really quite scary and unnerving to think that your personal details are somehow obtained by people.

"My message to people is to be vigilant and to scrutinise their bills very carefully. There are gangs of organised criminals who are committing this fraud."

Mike Naylor, Personal Finance Expert at independent online price comparison and switching service uSwitch.com, offered some reassurance to consumers affected by fraud.

"Importantly people aren't liable for fraud and will get any losses back from their card company - as their liability is nil if they have the card in their possession," Mr Naylor said.

"If people lose cards or have one stolen the maximum liability is 50 and this is normally waived. People should always check their statements carefully and query any rogue transactions."

Mr Naylor's comments nevertheless highlight the vital nature of card security, and it is advised you shred all bank statements you no longer intend to keep.
