APACS research looks into spending 'stereotypes'

24 October 2007

The payments association APACS has given an insight into how financial trends differ across the UK.

In releasing the spending habits information, the association hinted that certain regional stereotypes about how Britons deal with their money might well have a basis in fact.

The iconic 'loadsamoney' image of Londoners will be bolstered by the revelation that the South East has the highest proportion of credit card holders in the country at 75%.

Nationwide, the average is 67%.

In turn, the stereotype of Scots being careful and prudent with their cash is supported by the assertion that they are less likely to use 21st-century banking methods such as online or phone transactions and enquiries than any other region.

Director of Communications at APACS Sandra Quinn commented: "Different parts of Britain have long been associated with certain payment stereotypes - whether those are about being overly careful with spending or flash with the cash.

"We should all be taking advantage of the wealth of payment options out there, so managing our finances is as easy, secure and convenient as possible."

Other findings from APACS includes the fact that adults in the North West withdraw more from cash machines than any other region - and that North East residents pay by cheque in the greatest numbers.
