In a sign that contactless card payments will become more widespread in the future, financial services firm Halifax has launched their own payWave service today.
The new Visa cards will allow customers to pay for items worth £10 or less in participating stores without having to enter their PIN.
Halifax's entry into the market comes after Barclaycard's successful launch of its OnePulse card earlier this year.
As with the rival service, payWave will only function in certain outlets in London - with a view to opening up the scheme nationwide at a later date.
Currently, around 1,000 shops around the City area have signed up with Halifax - including branches of McDonalds, Yo! Sushi and Threshers.
Head of Banking at Halifax Paul Marriott-Clarke said: "We're delighted to be at the forefront of this scheme.
"Contactless payment through Visa payWave is quick and convenient - ideally suited to busy cities like London as it is the fastest and most convenient way for customers to pay for their small everyday purchases."
