Debt advice 'popular among parents'

20 March 2008

A new survey has claimed that British parents place more emphasis upon debt advice than any other help when talking to their offspring.

The report from Engage Mutual Assurance found that 81% of parents with children under the age of 18 proactively converse with them about financial worries.

And of these monetary matters, debt was the most-discussed topic, among 64% of those polled by the firm.

Engage Mutual Assurance 3GB Spokesperson Karl Elliot noted that the findings are a "reflection" of the changing situation in which debt - perhaps created on credit cards - has become a priority.

He remarked: "It is encouraging that so many parents are choosing to talk to their children about money. The needs of the modern family are changing and it's important that children are prepared."

Earlier this week, the Citizens Advice Bureau announced that there has been a rise in the number of people asking for help with their debt burden, thanks in part to the growing cost of basic goods.
