Politician 'victim of card fraud'

23 April 2008

David Davis, the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary, has said that he has been hit by a credit card fraudster.

The 60-year-old politician revealed that a hacker managed to gain access to his account and use the details to buy items in both the US and Britain, the Daily Mail reported.

His service provider cancelled the card after getting in touch with Mr Davis asking him if he had spent over £1,000 on the products, to which he replied no.

As a result of the activity, he suggested that the government should consider fresh measures, such as a specialised department, to try and beat criminals looking to make a profit on credit cards.

"This could happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. The fact it happened to me just goes to show that," he was quoted by BBC reporter Anna Adams as saying.

His comments came as part of an undercover BBC investigation into fraud in the cards industry.

UreLife stated this week that its new debt card should eliminate the need for consumers to take on debt via credit cards.
