Britons believe they need a "fantasy amount" of cash in order to fall back on and feel totally secure, it has been claimed.
Finance and relationship author Corrine Sweet noted that Brits want high amounts of cash to offer them an element of security.
According to Ms Sweet, it is "interesting" that men wish to have £102,000 while women crave a little less at £82,000.
She added that the figures may have been influenced by the recent credit crunch, which has made it harder for consumers to obtain services such as credit cards and personal loans.
"It's probably a sign of the times with the credit crunch and costs going up at the moment that people are feeling a bit wobbly and they feel they need something to [buffer] themselves against," she commented.
Her comments were based on research carried out by Kaupthing by Opinium Research, which also suggested that one in every 50 people would end a relationship if they thought they were secure financially.
