DIY 'can damage finances'

Home insurance firm Zurich has said that many Brits who carry out DIY work this bank holiday weekend will make mistakes and have to pay to rectify them.

The company said that nearly 16% of homeowners who have made alterations to their properties have damaged them and have had to fix it.

And professional help in these situations can on average set the consumer back £280 a time, Zurich revealed, outgoings that may impact on credit cards.

Technical Underwriting Manager at the outfit Steve Gilbert argued that people should think before they embark on jobs because their wallets will suffer in the long-run.

"Doing it yourself can be a great achievement but we would like to remind all DIY novices that they can often endanger themselves and their property, so if you are unsure, always call in a professional," he commented.

Television programmes often encourage UK homeowners to undertake improvement work on their properties, Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans has said.
