Police are taking a tough stance on credit card fraud and sending out a clear message to criminals, the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit (DCPCU) has insisted. The assertion comes after the unit raided a counterfeit card factory in Birmingham, arresting two people who were later charged with conspiracy to defraud. Detective Chief Inspector John Folan said the raid and the subsequent arrests represent a "significant development" in the fight against credit card fraud and organised crime. "We are sending a very clear warning to fraudsters that these crimes will not be tolerated and that we will continue to target them and disrupt their fraudulent activity," he remarked. Sandra Quinn of the UK payments association Apacs, which sponsors the DCPCU, insisted that Chip and PIN is still the safest method of payment for credit cards. Figures from Apacs reveal that in 2007 a total of £535 million was lost as a result of fraud on UK-issued credit and debit cards.
