German firm to launch scented credit cards

19 November 2008

A German electronics manufacturer is to launch a new range of scented credit cards which will be available in various fragrances.

Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has signed a deal with Commerzbank to provide several million of the cards over the next three years, PrintWeek reports.

They will be offered to customers through the bank's partner brands, which include TUI, Robinson, Advocard and Steigenberger.

According to Commerzbank vice president Sylvia Vandeven, the cards will be available in coffee, orange or cinnamon fragrances.

She said the new technology being developed by G&D will transform an ordinary credit card into "a small sensory experience".

News of these unique offerings comes after MasterCard announced plans to launch a diamond-inlaid credit card through the Kazakhstani bank Kazkommertsbank.

Aimed at the country's oil-rich billionaires, the exclusive cards will be laced with gold and will feature a real diamond as a centrepiece. It will be available for an annual fee of $1,000 (£670).
