One millionth contactless credit card issued by Barclaycard

28 November 2008

Barclaycard has issued its one millionth contactless credit card in the UK and announced that all newly issued Platinum cards will now include contactless technology.

The credit card provider conducted research which shows that 98% of consumers who have used contactless cards believe they are easy to use.

Furthermore, 88% think they save time when purchasing small items. Even those who have not used contactless cards before recognise their benefits, Barclaycard claimed.

Amer Sajed, Managing Director of UK Cards at the company, said: "We are delighted to have reached our target of issuing over one million contactless cards this year."

He said the findings of the survey show that consumers are continuing to embrace contactless cards, which allow them to make purchases under £10 without a PIN.

Meanwhile, the GSM Association has called for the integration of near field communication technology into most new mobile handsets.

It suggests this will drive take-up of contactless payment on mobile phones.
