Shoppers 'preparing themselves for airport bargains'

2 March 2009

Holidaymakers are planning ahead with their airport spending, new research suggests. Direct Line travel insurance reveals 65% of people carefully budget for their time spent in the airport, with many opting to splash out on their credit card with duty-free bargains. "For those planning to go away this year there are savings to be made, ranging from the usual tax-free treats at the airport, through to early bird bookings," comments Chris Price, Head of Direct Line travel insurance. Many shoppers are splashing-out on perfume and aftershave at the airport, the research shows, while 73% make the most of duty-free alcohol. Cigarettes and cigars are also popular with airport shoppers, as are cosmetics and other toiletries, the survey reveals. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, 241 million passengers passed through UK airports in 2007 - up 2.4 per cent from 2006. Holidaymakers thinking of splashing the cash at the airport need to make sure they have the best credit card in place, with uSwitch.com able to help find the best deal.
