Nationwide 'to start charging for card use abroad'

5 March 2009

Customers are soon to be charged for using their Nationwide credit and debit cards abroad, reports suggest. The provider says it intends to pass on the fee it is incurred by Visa when cards are used overseas, charging customers 0.84% for every credit card transaction. "It's not our fee, it's a third-party fee. We have absorbed it up to this point," a spokesman for the company reveals. The charges will come into force for credit cards on May 6th and for debit transactions on June 1st, although both will be raised by a further 1% in July when Visa ups its costs. Recent findings from Apacs, the UK payments association, discovered that 75 million debit cards were issued in the UK last year, with 5.5 billion purchases made using them.
