Savvy spenders 'cutting back on luxuries'

23 March 2009

A number of Britons are cutting back on life's luxuries in an attempt to cut costs, new figures show.

Food and travel are among the cutbacks people are making, research from Abbey Credit Cards shows, with entertainment expenditure also suffering.

In order to cope with financial difficulties, people may want to consider swapping their credit card for a 0% deal, says Callum Gibson, Head of Credit Cards at Abbey.

"At a time when people's finances are becoming ever more stretched, it's not surprising that Britons are becoming more astute about how they shop and are prepared to shop around," he adds.

By changing credit card provider, Britons are able to save an average of £443 a year, Mr Gibson claims, which is a "huge saving" for customers.

Apacs recently announced that credit card fraud was on the increase, adding that those transactions made without chip and PIN were the most vulnerable.
