Travellers need to search for the best card for their needs when heading off abroad to avoid being stung by charges, it is claimed.
With Nationwide set to charge its customers for using cards outside the eurozone for the first time next month, Alessia Horwich tells the Independent that customers can look for other options.
She says that despite Nationwide's decision to start incurring fees, there are still cards on the market which will give travellers more for their money.
Among them is the Post Office credit card, which gives 0% commission on purchases overseas, with the Saga credit card offering transactions without charge within Europe.
Using online comparison sites such as uSwitch.com can help holidaymakers find the right card for their needs.
Paul Green, head of communications at Saga, recently revealed that free European transactions is a popular feature of its platinum card, with travellers finding it "unpleasant" to come home to extortionate bills.
