A&L adds to online banking security

21 April 2006

Alliance & Leicester (A&L) has launched a new online banking security system designed to protect its customers from phishing attacks.

These are fraudulent emails designed to steal current account information from users.

More than two thirds of the company's customers are now using the new system, which protects consumers by requiring more information from them.

It identifies the computer as the customer's and then asks them to identify a picture and phrase chosen by the customer.

Mark Pavan from leading industry body Mapa said: "The new login security measures make Alliance & Leicester the most secure online bank in the UK at present.

"Not only will customers know that they are on the real Alliance & Leicester site, but Alliance & Leicester will also know the customer is indeed who they say they are."

Andy Muddimer, head of internet banking at A&L, said: "Whilst online fraud is a very small percentage of fraud overall, the new internet banking security measures offered by Alliance & Leicester will ease people's security concerns surrounding banking online."
