Ex-conman questions chip and PIN

15 May 2006

A reformed conman who inspired a Hollywood film about his life has questioned the security of the new chip and PIN card security system.

Both debit and credit cards now use the chip and PIN system, which requires consumers to enter their personal PIN number to complete transactions.

According to the Times, Frank Abagnale who inspired the movie Catch Me If You Can has suggested that fraudsters with the right equipment might not be too concerned about the new system.

"Anyone sitting at another table with a laptop would be able to pick up the messages being sent to and from the card readers," said Mr Abagnale, who now works for the FBI to battle against fraud.

His comments come just days after Shell announced that it was suspending the use of chip and PIN card readers in its garage outlets due to a security breach.
