Online bankers offered free anti-virus software

25 May 2006

Barclays is to offer its customers free anti-virus software in order to improve online banking security.

Its customers are also to be offered a text message service notifying them of new payees on their account, in an attempt to clamp down on online fraud.

Anti-virus software from security firm F-Secure will be handed out by Barclays, which is a highly regarded tool in the fight against internet crime.

"Online banking has revolutionised the way people manage their money and we are constantly working to keep our services as secure as possible," said Barnaby Davis, director of electronic banking.

He also gave some advice on how online banking customers could stay alert to the threat of internet fraud.

"It is important that customers take sensible steps to reduce the risk of becoming a victim - for example keeping personal information such as pin numbers and passwords secret, never revealing log in details and signing out after using secure websites.

"Our new anti-virus and SMS text initiatives will go a long way towards offering customers additional protection and peace of mind and help Barclays and its customers stay one step ahead of the criminals," he added.
