The British Bankers' Association has commented on the research by Defaqto showing a rise in bank charges.
Defaqto discovered that unpaid standing orders or direct debits are now more than £30 compared to around £27 in August 2003.
Brian Capon, BBA spokesman, said charges have risen as banks regularly keep their charging structure under review.
He added that if consumers stuck to the rules of their bank, then free banking will continue.
Mr Capon said: "Banks are very competitive commercial organisations. The personal banking market is pretty saturated – virtually everyone wants an account.
"The banks need to retain customers – like any other business, to attract new business. They will obviously keep a review as to how the business is going and they will make a commercial decision of where they want to be in the market place.
"They will make their own choices and it is up to the individual banks as to whether or not they introduce charges."
