Surveys commissioned to discover consumers' beliefs about the safety and viability of online banking have produced varied results, showing that many customers are still unsure whether or not online banking is for them.
One survey conducted by web experts PC Advisor suggested that over half of those questioned believed that online banking was "secure and convenient" and admitted to using it for all of their financial transactions.
Out of the 1,351 participants, only 3.2% preferred to use a cheque book to monitor their financial outgoings as they found the online option "too confusing".
However, an alternative study of 999 adults, commissioned by security software company Enterasys Networks, found that e-commerce and online banks have have not yet earned the trust of the public, with only a quarter or respondents believing that the banks would keep their personal details safe from hackers.
Mark Pearce, a security specialist at Enterasys networks, commented: "If companies can convince some of the e-commerce virgins to take the plunge, as well as build greater confidence amongst those who are occasional cyber-shoppers, there is still a huge amount of untapped business for those companies who can address and convince customers that their information is in safe hands."
