RBS says sorry for banking crash

4 June 2007

The Royal Bank of Scotland has issued a public apology after a technical glitch left thousands of its customers unable to use its cards.

In a public statement the bank said that a hardware fault caused a problem to develop across its ATMs as well as crashing its telephone and online banking. This left thousands of customers with no access to their current accounts over the weekend, as over-the-counter services were shut by 12:00GMT.

ATMs were thought to have all returned to normal as of last night, but some customers were still experiencing issues with the online and telephone banking options. A spokesperson for the Royal Bank of Scotland said: "We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused to our customers and we are working hard to sort it out."

She also said that it was mainly customers belonging to NatWest - which is owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland - who were still experiencing problems and stressed that engineers were working round the clock to resolve the issue.
