Britons bank online in increasing numbers

28 November 2007

It's official - organising your finances online is addictive.

New research from Abbey shows that a majority of Britons (53%) are using internet banking services to check accounts, pay bills and transfer funds at least every other day.

A hard core of 17% even admitted to the firm's pollsters that logging on to their bank accounts is the last thing that they do at night, cutting into time where they would usually be asleep.

Moreover, among Britons aged between 25 and 34, this figure rose to 28%.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, Abbey's Head of Savings, said: "For a long time we've observed a growing preference for the online channel but for the first time we are seeing evidence that people really are enjoying the online banking experience and claiming that it makes them better with managing and saving money.

"There is real satisfaction in watching savings grow and the Internet enables us to do this with real ease."

Further research from Abbey provided impressive evidence for the internet takeover of personal finances - with 84% of those polled saying that they bank online at least occasionally.

This compares impressively with the 93% who still bank in the traditional way, visiting branches from time to time.
