Dormant accounts website launched

5 February 2008

National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has stepped up its dormant accounts scheme - which aims to reunite customers with funds they have either mislocated or forgotten about.

In total, the savings and investments provider holds £460 million of unclaimed money - with banks and building societies holding a further £450 million between them.

The scheme is being run by NS&I with backing from the British Bankers' Association (BBA) and the Building Societies Association (BSA).

Online Manager for NS&I Ayesha De Silva commented: "We have been successful with our tracing service in reuniting people and it’s really a government initiative to try and get people to find their savings.

"We’ve [also] launched a new website which is www.mylostaccount.org.uk and it’s a very simple free online service…just click 'submit' and we’ll start the trace on your behalf."

"It was launched last week and it’s there ready for people to use."
