Lloyds apologises over wrongly-issued warning letters

29 October 2008

Lloyds TSB has apologised to a number of current account customers after they were wrongly informed that they had gone overdrawn. The bank wrote to several customers telling them they would be charged because they had slipped into the red when in fact they had not. It has confirmed that a "technical error" was responsible for the mistake and has sought to reassure the "tiny percentage" of those affected that they will not face penalty fees. A spokeswoman for the bank told the BBC: "We sincerely apologise for this error and will be writing to these customers shortly to confirm that this letter was sent by mistake and that they won't be charged." Lloyds TSB is one of several banks launching an appeal at the High Court over an earlier ruling on bank overdraft charges. It involves a judge's decision that the Office of Fair Trading has the power to rule whether the charges are fair.
