Over-65s are particularly vulnerable to fraudulent activity, reveals one expert.
Emma Soames, editor-at-large of Saga Magazine, believes people need to protect themselves against such scams, with older generations more likely to hand over their bank details.
"Do not give away personal information such as bank details and pin numbers, reputable companies don't ask for this information," she advises.
Considering deals first is also crucial, Ms Soames believes, with people advised not to feel under pressure to make a decision on the spot.
Asking the company to put the deal in writing is another option, which often deters companies which are not genuine.
Cifas, the UK fraud service, recently revealed that there has been a 40% increase in people being impersonated compared with the same period in 2008.
