Despite making savings on household bills and other outgoings, Britons are splashing their extra cash rather than putting it away, a survey has found.
The latest NS&I Quarterly Savings Survey found that 42% of people believe they spend less on utility bills and food during the summer months, although they choose to spend on leisure activities.
"It's always worth planning what you most want to do cost effectively and checking what free activities are on in your local area or perhaps consider packing up a picnic for an outdoor lunch rather than going to a restaurant," revealed Dax Harkins, NS&I's Savings Strategist.
Of those questioned, 92% said they use less heating in the summer and 82% revealed that they hang their washing outdoors as opposed to using the tumble drier.
Tesco Personal Finance recently revealed that more Britons are in search of bargain holidays this summer in a bid to beat the credit crunch.
